Shared Reading With the Father: An Investigation of Fathers' Family Literacy Practices in Taiwan

Abstract

Parents, including both mothers and fathers, play a pivotal role in children’s literary success throughout their entire education and even into adulthood. Research has focused mainly on maternal effects on children’s literacy development while very few studies investigate fathers’ role in family literacy practices. This study will examine fathers’ family literacy practices in Taiwan. 271 survey questionnaires were used to collect data about fathers’ family literacy practices and their attitudes towards early literacy development. The relationship between fathers’ family literacy practices and their demographic conditions was also assessed.
