Sat, April 9, 4:05 to 5:35pm, Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Room 209 A

Abstract

This international study investigated factors informing individuals’ decisions to become English teachers as a Foreign Language (EFL). Using a qualitative narrative study design, data were collected from 25 in-service teachers from Latin American, African, Middle Eastern and Asian countries. Researchers analyzed the use of narratives and counter-narratives and data revealed the following themes in EFL teachers' career choice: love and passion for the English language, influence from models and the need to get a job. Results indicated EFL teachers used narratives and counter- narratives to reflect upon their career decision process. Thematic analysis of EFL teachers’ reflections identified the following four themes: personal realization, support system, access to education and movement from global dominance to local empowerment.
