Teachers' Use of Formative Assessment in the Classroom

Abstract

Purpose. Formative assessment can play an important role in enhancing student learning (Bennett, 2011; Cauley & McMillan, 2010; Van der Kleij et al., 2015). However, in Dutch secondary education attention is particularly paid to summative assessment (Sluijsmans et al., 2013). In this paper, therefore, we explored how teachers apply formative assessment (FA) in the classroom and which prerequisites need to be met to apply FA more effectively.
