Nearly two decades into our new millennium, a persistent transnational problem remains: how do we prepare youth for 21st century global futures? Citing complex, rapidly emerging challenges, leaders worldwide lament a lack of innovation and press educational systems towards greater creativity development. Yet, perceptions of the concept, purpose, and implementation of creativity-focused initiatives vary greatly within and across nations. I explore this transnational issue by examining why creativity is critical to meeting 21st century challenges; how the construct of creativity is typically (mis)interpreted/(mis)applied; and how many student-centered initiatives fail to address the prevailing global call for innovation. I argue for a new global lens through which nations may begin to view teacher/educational leader assessment and development within a creativity framework.
