Investigating Perceived Needs Related to Faculty Teaching and Advising of International Graduate Students

Tue, April 12, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Convention Center, Floor: Level One, Room 158 B

Abstract

As the number of international students enrolling in American higher education grows,
the quality of the faculty advisor and international advisee relationship as an important indicator of success has become increasingly important. Although much research has focused on the challenges faced by international students in higher education from the perspective of those students, the sociocultural differences inherent in international student and faculty interactions can be just as challenging for the instructor as it is for the student. The current study sought to explore faculty perspectives of the challenges they face in teaching and advising international graduate students. Findings from the study provided insight into the resources faculty believe they need when working with these students.
