Global Engagement Model for Leadership and Justice: Mexico-U.S. Study Abroad in Graduate Education

Tue, April 12, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Convention Center, Floor: Level One, Room 158 B

Abstract

Study abroad programs at colleges/universities across the USA typically are for undergraduates, rather than graduate students. This research examined the feasibility and effectiveness of the Global Engagement Model (GEM), an education abroad experience developed for master’s and doctoral students to enhance/develop cultural competence and leadership for social justice. Conducted in 2014, this qualitative case study included doctoral students for the first time. Data from logs/journals, self-evaluations, and culminating projects corroborated findings from prior implementations with master’s students only (see Valerio, Stevahn, & Scott, 2013). Results revealed positive changes in cultural competence, dispositions toward inclusiveness, and skills for successful professional applications. Doctoral participation also resulted in deeper/complex construction of meaning/understanding, immediate on-site action, and more explicit/detailed articulations of professional leadership applications.
