In this paper we use a Bourdieusian analysis of capital and recognition to conceptualise how institutional racism has entrenched closed deterministic systems. By examining habitus revealed through 26 parents of 24 Black Children we reveal social positions have not been validated by the necessary power and authority in the school. School and College personnel need to understand how the common sense views have given common access to the generations of codes that have become policy and law over time. We recommend administrators, counsellors, teachers, policy makers, students and parents work together to develop participatory cultures within schools that enable Black children to have equitable access to capital and funds of knowledge.
