Global Poverty and Higher Education: Exploring Integrative Pedagogical Possibilities in an International Subsistence Marketplaces Initiative

Fri, April 8, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Convention Center, Floor: Level One, Room 154 B

Abstract

Launched in September 2015, the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) aimed to “end poverty in all its forms everywhere.” As higher education is increasingly recognized for its roles in addressing global poverty issues and sustainable development, it is critical that we understand the conceptual and pedagogical aspects of this work. Against this historical backdrop, my project examines the roles of higher education in global poverty reduction and the pedagogical possibilities for integrating global poverty into higher education teaching, learning, research, and social services. Drawing upon Capabilities Approach and Critical Pedagogy, my project is grounded in an international Subsistence Marketplaces Initiative in India, Argentina, Tanzania, and the U.S., which integrates research, education, and social services to address global poverty issues.
