In this paper, we present, from an indigenous knowledge perspective, the philosophy of viewing individuals’ available resources as communal capital. Communal capital constitutes a shared pool of resources to be used in accordance with identified need. Irrespective of age, gender and region, there was consensus among the participants about the fact that resource use whether in times of abundance or scarcity, are shared, contributed and invested to care for one another and provide support. Problems are equally experience in unison.
High risk schools are a common feature but this philosophy of care permeates the educational settings as well. Communal care of children is common place and educational support is made available to families and children in need. The support to high risk schools range from assistance with homework, uniforms, food and other material resources; in addition to emotional support to deal with difficult situations within the education setting. Practical examples are presented.
