The purpose of this exploratory qualitative study was to assess Chinese and African American students’ perceptions of their understanding and value of diversity, their perceptions of barriers to interactions across cultural groups, and what educational institutions can do to enhance students’ understanding and relationships prior to their study away. The findings suggest that broadening the meaning and understanding of diversity is important for both groups of students, and they had valuable lessons for transformational educational leaders, leaders who are interested in creating truly global student experiences.
