Invited Speakers. Beyond the Traditional Dissertation: Research on Life in Schools, Neighborhoods, and Communities in the U.S. South

Abstract

This interactive symposium brings together a group of multiethnic researchers to explore innovative and courageous ways to represent the contested life in schools, communities, and neighborhoods in the U. S. South. Through fiction, memoir, slave narrative, oral history, and documentary film, the presenters, who are public school teachers and doctoral candidates, will illustrate diverse forms of non-traditional dissertation inquiries drawing upon and moving beyond a wide array of theoretical traditions, methodological boundaries, and representational modes. Innovative writings engendered from the inquiries will be demonstrated. The potentials, challenges, and future directions of such inquiries and representations are also discussed.
