Session Type: Symposium
Inclusion is rooted in a philosophy that emphasizes the uniqueness of all learners, not just students with disabilities (Fisher & Frey, 2001).Legal mandates ensure inclusion for students with disabilities. However, .effective inclusionary practices benefit all students, including English language learners, African American males, incarcerated students and sexual minority youths (Banks, 2014). The purpose of this symposium is to examine current realities for special populations in urban schools. Six papers provide a broad theoretical inclusive framework rooted in social justice. These presenters’ conceptualization of inclusive schools adds to discourses about special needs students and provides effective strategies school leaders operating from a social justice framework can implement to create more inclusive schools, especially in urban centers.
