Session Submission Summary

Studying Educational Inequalities From an International Perspective

Mon, April 11, 11:45am to 1:15pm, Convention Center, Floor: Level One, Room 147 B

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

Data from international large-scale assessments like PISA or TIMSS provide the unique opportunity to compare inequalities in student achievement across countries. The international variation in inequality not only serves monitoring purposes but can also be used to explore relationships between educational policies and inequality. The overall purpose of the session is to consolidate interdisciplinary perspectives on issues related to international comparative research on educational inequality. An introductory presentation will discuss the relationship between quality and equity. Thereafter, one contribution addresses how educational inequality is measured in international studies. Two further presentations address the impact of poverty and tracking on educational inequalities. A discussant will comment on commonalities and differences among the papers.
