Lesson Learned About Increasing Mathematics Achievement Through Spatial Instruction

Abstract
Spatial skills are being increasingly viewed as important foundational skills for mathematics. Research has recently focused on exactly how spatial skills affect mathematics achievement and whether improving spatial skills improves mathematics achievement. This symposium will focus on the impact of spatial skills on mathematics achievement and the effectiveness of programs designed to improve spatial skills and mathematics achievement. It will begin with an overview of the role of spatial skills in mathematics achievement that is based in longitudinal research and then move to presentations and discussions of several programs designed to improve spatial skills in elementary school, middle school and college.
