Five Years of Research: Inclusive STEM Schools as Vehicles for Improving Educational Opportunity

Mon, April 11, 4:30 to 6:30pm, Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Room 206

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

Science, technology, engineering, and/or mathematics (STEM)-focused schools, in their varied manifestations, are a rising phenomenon in education. Recent Federal policy and budgetary commitments prioritize STEM schools that are inclusive of students from groups historically underrepresented in STEM fields as a potential vehicle for enhancing equality of educational opportunity and equity more generally. Yet, evidence is just starting to emerge concerning the impacts of such schools and of which school configurations and elements are critical in achieving those impacts. The symposium’s objectives are to 1) describe relevant research studies funded by the National Science Foundation, 2) synthesize key findings across studies, and 3) identify implications for a future research agenda, system-wide reform policies, and school-level practices.
