Session Type: Symposium
This session explores disciplinary writing, reading, and other literacy practices for students currently or previously designated as English learners (also referred to as language minority students and emergent bilinguals)—and how students and teachers conceptualize, engage in, and develop those practices across currently underexplored contexts. Beginning with one students’ disciplinary literacy development and successful navigation of a bachelor’s degree, the session then works “backwards” through academic levels, exploring disciplinary genres at the community college level, the transformation of a high school ESL teacher’s argumentative writing epistemology, and the linguistic features of middle school textbooks. As disciplinary literacy and “college and career readiness” gain prominence with new K-12 standards, the session explores necessary intersections across disciplines, educational levels, and research communities.
