The iPIPS project (www.ipips.org) aims to fill a gap in international studies. It focuses on children starting school and is based on development work over 20 years.
The project, whilst solidly founded, has faced challenges and these are set out alongside solutions to most of the problems. The first paper addresses generic issues and the second, recounts a successful attempt to equate Russian mathematics results from with those from England and Scotland. The third paper, from China, notes the very different pathways towards literacy and numeracy in China and how that impacts on assessment development. Finally, the issues associated with adapting the assessment to a South African language for which there is no standardised form are addressed.
