Session Type: Roundtable Session
Since 2010, Urban Prep Charter Academy for Young Men in Chicago has boasted 100% college acceptance to a four-year college or university for each of its Black male graduates. This symposium scrutinizes Urban Prep’s administration, academic rigor, curriculum, instruction, school culture, stakeholder relationships, and other factors that ultimately reduce opportunity gaps for urban Black male students. Discussion will include, but is not limited to, considerations for replicating single-gender public schools (e.g. Urban Prep Academies is opening a campus in Washington D.C.) and (re)conceptualizing postsecondary readiness unique to the needs of urban Black males. Attendees will also have an opportunity to hear from a group of Urban Prep alumni who are recent college graduates.
