Troubling Omissions and Underplayed Issues in the History of Educational Leadership Research and Practice

Mon, April 11, 7:45 to 9:15am, Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Room 206

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

History is inevitably selective. Some narratives get told and retold; others receive less attention or, in certain cases, are almost completely ignored. The selective dimension of history can be especially problematic if the stories of entire groups of people are overlooked or grossly underplayed; if the orientation of a sub-field does not quite mesh with general thinking within the field and, consequently, does not get the attention it deserves; or if the existing boundaries of a field or subfield obscure potentially relevant ideas developed outside that field or subfield. The purpose of this session is to begin to amend the established historical record by focusing on what has been omitted or underplayed in histories of the educational leadership field.
