Session Type: Symposium
Presenters explore a YouTube video featuring a young boy named Asa telling a story – The Scared is Scared (Giaever, 2013) – through three theoretical frames rooted in multiliteracies approaches. Paper One explores how the work of Deleuze and Guattari (1987) challenges traditional notions of narrative construction. Paper Two draws on multimodal and socio-cultural views of literacy to explore how play and remixing interact and intertwine as children construct meaning. Paper Three draws on mediated discourse theory to examine how children’s play with digital media engages embodied participation. This unique symposium will feature paper presentations followed by five minutes of comments by each presenter to name, explore, and connect ideas across the three presentations. A discussant will close the session.
