Session Type: Symposium
Assessment of student learning outcomes (SLOs) has received heightened attention among U.S. higher education institutions. Institutions use SLO assessments for multiple purposes such as regional and program accreditation, internal improvement, and accountability. This symposium discusses the development of next-generation SLO assessments in higher education that focus on important competencies such as critical thinking, written communication, quantitative literacy, and oral communication. This symposium will provide an overview about the research principals used to guide the assessment design and empirical results based on a large-scale pilot test involving over 8,500 students from 41 institutions. This session provides a great opportunity for researchers and institutions working on similar issues to learn about latest updates in the field of SLO assessments.
