Session Type: Symposium
This session involves scholars whose work examines how Ethnic Studies and Education intersect to understand the educational experiences of students and teachers of color. We present research that: 1) explores Ethnic Studies approaches for elementary classrooms; 2) investigates how Ethnic Studies supports and prepares Filipina/o American K-12 teachers; 3) examines the development of multiliteracies in an Ethnic Studies class for im/migrant Latina@ youth; and 4) examines the impact of Black Studies for Black students. We aim to demonstrate the potential of critical pedagogies of race and Ethnic Studies in K-12 classrooms to foster 21st century literacies, civic engagement, and academic development. To this end, we offer ways educators can better serve historically marginalized students through Ethnic Studies.
