Session Type: Symposium
This 90-minute symposium advances the discourses on public scholarship by explicating new ontologies on self-other, community, and social transformation. It aims to rethink educators’ pursuit of “democracies” by sharing diverse epistemologies and ontologies. The topics include Donghak [Eastern Learning] and redefining the self-other relation, self-cultivation in considering the self-other interactions, volunteering activities by reflecting on a Confucian ethos of selfhood, and self-development and self-transformation grounded in Confucianism. This cross-cultural conversation provides a diverse framework to revisit our taken-for-grantedness on self-other and public scholarship as well as to reconceptualize the meaning of self-other, community, and social engagement. .
