Session Type: Symposium
In this symposium, five papers from five different countries – Brazil, Chile, Portugal, the United States, and Turkey – will discuss a relatively new phenomenon in education: attempts to privatize teacher education systems around the World. Through sharing both statistical and qualitative research data, these papers offer different perspectives about this highly complex theme and analyze how privatization of teacher education has been a battleground in each specific context. The main goal of this symposium is to focus upon the similarities and the differences among these five distinct contexts and to discuss the place and mission of the public in teacher preparation and the threats it faces.
