Literacy in Transcultural and Cosmopolitan Times: A Call for Change

Abstract

While language and literacy research has made a strong contribution to understanding the complex sociocultural literacy practices of transcultural youth, studies that examine how educators are conceptualizing pedagogical innovations that encourage enhanced literacy learning and development of cosmopolitan identities in a connected world are more sparse. Within contemporary environments, youth have access to languages, information and participatory platforms in unprecedented ways and understanding literate behaviours requires new theoretical/ research approaches. This symposium is a binational effort to examine contexts in school and in informal learning spaces focusing on languages, immigrants and pedagogical interventions using a variety of research methodologies. We describe projects that encourage the proliferation of multilingual /cosmopolitan literacy practices and engage with inequities and needed reform in schools.
