Understanding School Choice as a Geographically Relational Phenomenon Across North America: Using Geographic Information Systems Approaches

Mon, April 11, 7:45 to 9:15am, Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Exhibit Hall D Section C

Session Type: Roundtable Session

Abstract

This panel renews and reinvigorates current geo-spatial analytic approaches to educational policy research in the area of school choice. It will provide new insights into how geographic patterns and practices, which include distance travelled and location decisions, among other things, are expressions of values, resources, structures, practices and policies in increasingly polarized urban centers. This panel highlights the importance of fully appreciating geography as an important indicator and symbol of our social and political practices, while engaging with innovative methodological tools and approaches. It will present new case studies that can enhance Geographic Information Systems research on education in four major cities across North America.
