Session Submission Summary

Engaging Male and Female STEM Students: Investigations of Learning Environments and Teacher Influences

Mon, April 11, 7:45 to 9:45am, Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Room 207 A

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

Despite the importance of STEM education to economic growth, we still see declining interest in STEM over time, a persistent gender gap in STEM careers, and faltering STEM performance. These problems are complex and need to be understood by investigating how contextual features (learning environments; teacher practices and beliefs) relate to motivation and interact with gender to predict STEM achievement and career pursuit. This symposium brings together research from teams investigating these interactions in the US, Australia, and Germany in K-12 and post-secondary contexts. The research includes path models of contextual and motivational factors related to STEM engagement and investigations of environments designed to foster STEM engagement. All teams explored the role of gender.
