Researchers share a collection of inquiries using self-study methods to examine the role of language and literacy teacher educators in the preparation of teachers who serve linguistically, culturally, racially, and religiously diverse populations. Presenters examine teacher education practices, policies and perspectives in multiple countries, as well as the impact of languages, cultures, cultural awareness and immigration on schools and schooling. Professional and personal identities--of teachers and teacher educators, the importance of collaboration and “critical friendships” are crosscutting themes within the presentations. This group of scholars will generate lively discussion regarding the integral role of language and literacy education in developing and supporting healthy, diverse democracies as well as the critical contribution of self-study methodology to this larger project.
