Literacy, Positioning, and Agency: Multiple Perspectives From Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Learners and Families

Tue, April 12, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Convention Center, Floor: Level One, Room 102 B

Session Type: Structured Poster Session

Abstract

Using positioning theory (Harré & van Langenhove, 1999) as an analytic concept, six distinct, yet conceptually similar studies explore positioning, agency and language/literacy experiences among culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) students and families. To construct equitable spaces that support the educational participation of CLD students and families, we must understand how they make sense of their identities and positioning as agents in various figured worlds (Holland et al., 1996). Posters and accompanying audio-visual displays will serve as springboards for a group discussion of common findings and implications.
