Educating diverse democracies begins at home. In the wake of the Charleston Emmanuel AME killing of nine African American pillars of the community by a young white supremacist, several parenting questions come to mind. As Matias & Montoya (2015) describe, for parents of color, the questions focus more on keeping their children alive in the midst of “racial extermination”. For antiracist white parents, there is also a conversation to be had with their children so that they may also participate in socially just initiatives. This panel will focus on critical race parenting for parents of color and anti-racist white parents, offering both questions and real conversations had with children around race and racism.
