Valid Assessment of Learning Outcomes in Higher Education: Cross-National Comparisons

Abstract

This symposium will provide an overview of key assessments of student learning outcomes (SLOs) in higher education conducted in seven countries on four continents. Individual and national approaches to assessing SLOs in generic and domain-specific content areas of higher education (e.g. economics, critical thinking) will be outlined. New and enhanced assessment instruments and typically non-parallel design and implementation processes employed in e.g. USA will be presented, as will a successfully tested instrument subsequently adapted in e.g. Italy all of which have been designed to maintain in-country validity and cross-national comparability. In addition to discussing comparability issues related to translation, adaptation, validation, sampling, administration, and analyses, presenters will share lessons learned, cross-national comparative results of SLO assessments, and exemplary implementation frameworks.
