Session Type: Symposium
At a time when school children are increasingly diverse, school curricula has become more normalized, with test-driven curricular and pedagogical practices. These normalized practices are antithetical to children's everyday lives as multilingual, multicultural, and multimodal communicators and composers. Our purpose in this symposium is to reconsider children's playful learning as new curricular norms and to reimagine teaching and learning under the Common Core State Standards. Drawing on ethnographic studies in five classrooms (PreK-4) in New York City, we illustrate the possibilities and potential of creating hybrid curricular spaces for all students to learn while critiquing the structured school practices when curricula devalue children's creativity and ways of learning.
