Session Type: Symposium
The field of teacher education is in the midst of a turn towards more practice-based teacher education. Although there are a variety of ways to conceptualize what it means to be “practice-based,” the participants in this symposium focus on efforts to help novices develop and enact core practices of teaching (c.f Authors). As part of a design-based research project, members of this cross-institutional and cross-disciplinary consortium of teacher educators made the core practice of discussion a focus for their pre-service subject matter methods courses. The symposium will offer perspectives on the process of identifying and specifying the core practice of discussion within and across disciplines and the process of teaching prospective teachers to facilitate whole classroom discussion in different disciplines.
