Academics in the Earliest Years of Formal Schooling: Building Evidence for Policy and Practice

Abstract
This session explores a range of policy questions related to preschool and kindergarten. The first of four papers uses experimental data to understand the fadeout of effects of a promising preschool mathematics intervention. Two papers leverage newly released data from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study of Kindergarten: 2010 to explore the effects of both time use in kindergarten and time outside of school on achievement and behavioral outcomes. The fourth uses data from North Carolina to estimate the effects of delayed kindergarten entry for students with disabilities. These papers explore questions related to academic and non-academic time in the earliest years of school, as well as the effects of policy changes and interventions on a range of important student outcomes.
