Session Type: Symposium
This interactive symposium focuses on beginning mathematics teaching and the resources that support beginners’ practice and ongoing learning. The first paper introduces a framework for understanding beginning mathematics teachers and beginning mathematics teaching. The second paper reports on beginners’ skills with leading mathematics discussions. The third paper examines the way beginning mathematics teachers re-contexualize practices learned in their teacher education program. The fourth paper describes processes used in a longitudinal study of beginners to capture ambitious mathematical planning and instruction at scale. Synthesizing across these four studies, we aim to better understand the development of beginning teachers, their practices, and how to programmatically support their growth.
