Session Type: Symposium
Huge demographic changes in elementary school enrollments (Hernandez, Denton, & Macartney, 2008) underscore the need for meaningful access to learning for emerging bi(multi)lingual learners. Utilizing the theoretical framework of Holland, Lachicotte, Skinner, & Cain (1998) this symposium examines the figured world of Proyecto Bilingüe - a figured world constructed through social processes across five cohorts of bilingual teachers (n=53). The qualitative studies examine ways Latina/o teachers ‘figure’ what constitutes “best practices” for Spanish/English bilingual learners. Across the studies these practices include creating spaces for authoring, fostering translanguaging, creating cultural artifacts, and promoting inclusionary practices. The goal of the session is to reveal a figured world where bilingual, multicultural, and multimodal artifacts offer exemplary ways to author teacher and student identities.
