Session Submission Summary

Democratizing Learning Through Digital Badges: Theoretical and Analytical Frameworks to Advance Design and Research

Sat, April 9, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Convention Center, Floor: Level One, Room 101

Session Type: Structured Poster Session

Abstract

In this structured poster session, we examine the constraints and affordances of digital badges in informal and formal learning environments. This session brings together researchers to advance technologically enhanced learning research around badges exploring theoretical frameworks, analytical techniques, and design considerations. Relevant theoretical frameworks are proposed to position digital badging studies within the context of their settings. We present appropriate analytical techniques to conduct their inquiry and inform future methodology for research on digital badges. We examine how design decisions of digital badges and badge systems shape what is valued and recognized as learning. Each poster connects to the session’s overarching theme of creating opportunities for learning through the design, implementation, and evaluation of digital badges.
