Abstract

This session tells about the lives of young people, between 11-to-16 years old, at an alternative to detention program (ATDP) in New York City. Under the larger themes of literacies, youth, media, and justice, court involved youth remain a group of young people who are pushed to the margins of educational conversations. Offering the work of emerging literacies scholars, the papers in this session expand upon existing concepts of cosmopolitanism, multimodal play, critical pedagogy, and disability studies to illustrate how court involved youth engage in meaning making with various media and materials-videos, images, and text-to redefine their identities and their sense of belonging in the world. It concludes with a caveat on multimodal mashup approaches to theory generation.
