Session Type: Symposium
For years, school counseling programs and school counselors were absent from many of the educational conversations that spoke to changes in curriculum, instruction, and pedagogy. Thankfully this is no longer the situation. Since the mid-1990s the school counseling profession has undergone a transformation that parallels the call for change in schools (Education Trust, 1997; ASCA, 2012). Current research suggests changing counselor preparation, delivering evidence based programs, utilizing technology in meaningful ways, and taking an active role in college and career readiness, to propel the profession forward. This symposium presents the research to support these four critical topics as essential to positioning school counselors and their programs as essential to a quality and effective education for every student.
