Teachers as Makers, Writers, and Players

Abstract

Although the maker movement, or the “growing number of people who are engaged in the creative production of artifacts in their daily lives and who find physical and digital forums to share their processes and products with others” (Halverson & Sheridan, p. 496) often conjures images of 3D printing, robotics, and DIY practices, this symposium is interested in conceptualizing writing-as-making, too (Eideman-Aadahl, 2013; Prins, 2012; Shipka, 2011), understanding both as acts of production. Specially, we look closely at teacher making, which has gained traction in professional development but been the focus of few research studies. The four research papers in this panel explore teachers making across diverse crafting, writing, planning, game design, and social composing practices.
