Session Type: Roundtable Session
This session aims to develop recent conversations in the learning sciences foregrounding a view of learning as becoming. Whereas a focus on “learning” typically draws attention to changes in an individual’s cognitive capacities, a focus on “becoming” draws attention to additional dimensions of change over time, and in particular, to a broader set of social organizational practices in which the person is embedded and through which she or he charts a course. The papers in this session together seek to capture both a sense of how a person makes oneself into a professional of a certain sort, and how one is made into a professional as one traverses a pathway through both the formal and informal experiences associated with education.
