Session Type: Symposium
Improvement science is an educational research and development approach that focuses on learning-by-doing in order to make progress toward a specific aim with respect to a shared problem of practice. A key tool employed is the Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycle, an iterative model for practice-based “experiments” that test promising interventions or innovations. The papers in this session illustrate the use of PDSA cycles in efforts to improve mathematics teaching and learning across a variety of projects that differ in terms of content, timescale, scope, and measurement. This session both illustrates the efficacy and promise of PDSA cycles for improving mathematics teaching and learning as well as highlights the variability and flexibility in its application.
