Abstract

The interrelated theoretical perspectives of social semiotics and multimodality extend the traditional view of writing and invite us to attend to a wider range of modes (i.e., speech, writing, images, gestures, movements, sounds, etc.) to represent and communicate meaning. Although written text has always held a central position in communicating meaning, the multimodal perspective repositions all modes to be equally important. This paper session will explore a variety of alternative assessments through multimodal and semiotics lenses.
