Digital Storytelling as a Responsive Critical Method for Empowering In-Service Female Teachers and Primary School

Mon, May 1, 8:15 to 9:45am, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Hemisfair Ballroom 1

Abstract

Digital Storytelling (DST) can be used as a means for giving voice and empowering early primary school students by utilizing the ancient art of storytelling through digital media. There are few research studies on DST with small children, which may be due to a developmentalist assumption that students lack the necessary readiness. This research proposes the use of DST offers a responsive means of giving voice to children in early primary school specifically with a female teacher as facilitator. It engages them mind, body and spirit, promoting a classroom structure of equality. As a critical pedagogy, DST empowers and challenges prevailing social structures by minimizing inequalities and increasing student engagement.
