The two most commonly used nonverbal tests for gifted identification, the Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test (NNAT) and the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) nonverbal battery, have been directly compared in two studies, but not in their current versions. Additionally, some of those comparison papers have not included important demographic variables known to have relationships with performance on nonverbal tests such as socioeconomic status and/or special education status. In this study, CogAT7 nonverbal battery scores were compared to NNAT2 scores of kindergarteners from a very large urban school district to explore the differences between how each test relates to major demographic variables and examine the effects on who is selected for participation in gifted programming based on which test is used.
