Stories From the American South: From Living Experiences to the Promise of Equal Educational Opportunities

Abstract

We paint a picture of the histories that have influenced the development of education in the CSRA. Using oral history research we examine an extensive history of controversies, diversity, oppression, injustice, and struggles for equality and justice in the conservative American south. We present a mosaic of important grassroots, unheard, undocumented stories from people—particularly from marginalized groups who lived through events such as the civil rights movement and desegregation, in order to illuminate the events from the lives of people experiencing them. The persistent question of whether access to equal educational opportunities has been achieved is appropriate more than ever to ask; whether we are better positioned today to improve educational opportunities is central in our discussion.
