An Analysis of Factors Affecting Campus Crime in U.S. Postsecondary Institutions

Abstract

In this study, the researcher examined how student, institutional, and community characteristics related to campus crime, and investigated the differences in the relationship between campus crime and student, organizational, and community characteristics across different sectors of institutions. Using the data from three large national datasets, the researcher utilized a Negative Binomial Regression to address research questions in the study. The results suggested that out of 22 variables tested in the study, four student, eight institutional, and five community variables were significant predictors of campus crime at all Public 4-Year, Private Nonprofit 4-Year, and Public 2-Year institutions in the sample. Differences existed in the relationships between campus crime and student, organizational, and community characteristics across institutional sectors.
