This research study investigates prospective teachers’ development of effective mathematics instructional practices through university courses that comprise a middle level mathematics endorsement program. We also examine the extent to which a community of learners across distances can be developed. The program consisted of five courses delivered to four remote sites via teleconferencing and other communication and learning technologies. Interviews and student work samples comprise the bulk of the data set. Findings indicate that specific programmatic and instructional activities were effective at building community, and also supported the potential development of key instructional practices. Implications on mathematics teacher preparation and distance learning will be provided.
