Assessment Literacy for Parents

Abstract

The third and final presenter will deal with the assessment literacy for parents of school-age children and parents of younger children who will soon be eligible to attend school. In this presenter’s view, the parents of children in school (and those with younger children soon to enter school) constitute a particularly potent political constituency whose views, if effectively registered, can have a significant impact on education policymakers and on educational leaders. As such, it would seem obvious that if parents possess basic understandings about what educational testing can do—and what it can’t do—then the recommendations of such a nonpartisan, yet vitally concerned group will often carry great weight with those making key educational choices.
