Teachers use children’s books to introduce science concepts and support deeper science instruction. However, many books do not counteract children’s narrow perceptions of science and scientists because they do not portray diverse scientists and do little to develop children’s understanding of the nature of science. This study evaluated a sample of award winning science picture books from 2015. Using a content analysis, the study addressed the diversity of scientists, the fields portrayed, and the nature of science as represented in the sample. Results showed the sample represented improvement over previous analyses, especially with respect to the in-depth portrayal of the nature of science. However, issues with diversity among scientists and a paucity of scientific fields represented remained a problem.
